Sportsmen’s Tennis and Enrichment Center opens.

(Spring) Originally the Sportsmen’s Tennis Club, it is located at 930 Blue Hill Avenue. Founded by Jimmy Smith and Gloria and Gloria Smith, is the first African-American-founded, nonprofit urban tennis club in the U.S.. Its purpose is to introduce inner-city young people to the sport, and it attracts professionals included Arthur Ashe, Althea Gibson, and Rod Laver to operate clinics. The organization began as a program offering free tennis lessons to young people at the Cabot Street gymnasium in 1961.
